Is WhatsApp safe

Is WhatsApp safe to use?

For the content of your chats, mostly yes. WhatsApp end-to-end encrypts personal messages, group chats and voice and video calls by default, using the Signal Protocol. It still collects information about how you use it, such as your IP address and when you use the app, and it can disclose information in response to a valid legal request. End-to-end encryption means only the people in a chat can read it: the server in the middle passes along scrambled data.

Is WhatsApp end-to-end encrypted?

Yes, for chats between people. WhatsApp's Encryption Overview (version 9, February 2026) says it considers all messages, voice calls and video calls between users' devices to be end-to-end encrypted.

Is WhatsApp really encrypted end to end? It defines end-to-end encryption as communication where "no third parties, not even WhatsApp or our parent company Meta, can access the content in between."

The same paper names the exceptions. WhatsApp does not consider chats with Meta services, or with businesses that use its Cloud API, to be end-to-end encrypted, and it shows a system message in those chats.

Are WhatsApp calls and group chats encrypted?

Yes. The Encryption Overview says personal voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted, that WhatsApp group calls are end-to-end encrypted, and that group messages are encrypted with a key shared only among the group's members.

Groups that include a business's Cloud API are the exception the paper names, and WhatsApp marks them with a system message.

What can WhatsApp still see?

Information about how you use the app. Its privacy policy says it collects device and connection information including your IP address, timestamps such as when you last used WhatsApp, your profile picture and about text, and when groups are created or updated.

It also says: "your personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted. No one else, not even WhatsApp, can read or listen to them."

Where does Socketchat fit?

Socketchat is end-to-end encrypted group chat in the terminal, for a small group that runs its own server. It needs no phone number, and the server sees room rosters, timing and IP addresses, never message contents. Is Socketchat safe? covers the details.

WhatsApp's encryption protects messages between devices. Its Encryption Overview says keys taken from a device cannot decrypt messages sent earlier, and keys taken from one device cannot decrypt messages sent to your other devices.

Is WhatsApp safe from government requests?

WhatsApp says it cannot read personal messages or listen to calls, because they are end-to-end encrypted. Its privacy policy also says it may access, preserve or disclose certain information if there is a valid legal request, and it collects details such as IP addresses and usage times.
